Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer s Journey Book Description :

The beloved best seller has been revised and expanded for the fifth edition. Jolene Brackey has a vision: that we will soon look beyond the challenges of Alzheimer's disease to focus more of our energies on creating moments of joy. When people have short-term memory loss, their lives are made up of moments. We are not able to create perfectly wonderful days for people with dementia or Alzheimer's, but we can create perfectly wonderful moments, moments that put a smile on their faces and a twinkle in their eyes. Five minutes later, they will not remember what we did or said, but the feeling that we left them with will linger. The new edition of Creating Moments of Joy is filled with more practical advice sprinkled with hope, encouragement, new stories, and generous helpings of humor. In this volume, Brackey reveals that our greatest teacher is having cared for and loved someone with Alzheimer's and that often what we have most to learn about is ourselves.

Do Not Cast Me Away Book Description :

The quick facts are these: Alzheimer's Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and is the only cause of death in the top ten in America that cannot be prevented, slowed, or cured. In 2015, dementias cost our nation an estimated $226 billion. By 2050, these costs could rise to as high as $1.1 trillion. Dementias not only affect individuals and their families, they plague us in other kinds of ways, as well. What happens when the owner of the most important company in town begins to be affected? Or a surgeon at the hospital? Or the pastor of your church? No place that involves people is immune. If dementia has not come to your pulpit, it will. It most assuredly has arrived already in your congregation. The aim of this book is to demystify dementia in order to encourage families and congregations to respond to it in meaningful, helpful, and faithful ways. This is a conversation we all need to enter. Like it or not, dealing with dementia is now part of the stewardship of our lives together.

Open a Window Book Description :

Review for Open A Window This book shares what is possible if we allow a person with Alzheimer's to "be" who they are right now. Thank you for "opening" a window, Fay. Jolene Brackey Alzheimer's speaker and author of "Creating Moments Of Joy" This caregiver handbook is designed to help care for people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia illnesses in the home, hospital, nursing home or home health settings. As a Certified Nurse Aide for fifteen years, I learned with my on the job training how to work with the residents at the nursing home. My ten years of experience helping my mother take care of my father was valuable to my work at the nursing home, and what I learned at the nursing home helped me take care of my father. Until I retired from the nursing home, I was a volunteer on the local Alzheimer's Association Outreach program from 1999 to 2008. I spoke to many groups in my area to educate them about Alzheimer's, and I facilitated an Alzheimer's support group at the nursing home. Because of my efforts I was awarded in 2004 Nurse Aide of the year by the Iowa Health Care Association and in 2006 Excellence for Professional Caregiver Award from the Alzheimer's Association in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Puppetry in Dementia Care Book Description :

Even in the later stages of the disease, when memory, words and relationships are affected, it is possible for people with dementia to express emotions, imagination, humour, sensitivities and personal preferences. This book demonstrates the many ways in which puppetry and associated art forms such as singing and story-telling can be used in a person-centred way to create opportunities for these human responses to emerge. The author describes different scenarios in which puppetry can help facilitate connections, including in response to changes in relationships, communicating when words fail and in times of distress or conflict. She explains how puppets can be used to stimulate memories, celebrate life achievements and promote self-esteem and confidence, as well as with those nearing the end of life as part of palliative care. Strategies for introducing puppetry and other forms of creative stimulation into daily care are suggested, and real examples are used to illustrate how creativity may benefit the person with dementia beyond the immediate session. Step-by-step instructions for making a variety of puppets are also included. This thought-provoking book will be a source of inspiration and practical ideas for care staff and activity coordinators, creative arts therapists, occupational therapists, puppeteers and other artists working in care settings, as well as relatives of people with dementia looking for new ways to connect with their loved ones.
