This handbook was previously distributed as a supplement to the Journal of Special Operations Medicine. The realm of special operations forces (SOF) medicine is a unique and ever-changing one that demands specialized training for our joint SOF. Managing trauma on today’s battlefield presents a dynamic array of challenges where limited resources can be rapidly overwhelmed. An austere environment, hostile gunfire, and delays in casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) are the norms for the special operations medic. The material in this handbook was gleaned from special operations medics operating in the Global War on Terrorism and other operational environments. It should not be viewed as a substitute for the professional training and judgment of special operations medics; rather, it is designed to be a hip-pocket reference on the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of SOF-relevant tactical combat casualty care. Key Lessons Ninety percent of combat loss of life occurs before casualties ever reach a military treatment facility (MTF); treatment prior to casualty evacuation is vital. Litter carries are fundamental for good patient care; they prevent further injury and get individuals off target as soon as possible. Rehearse manual carry methods prior to deployment. Every special operations warfighter should carry a tourniquet and be thoroughly familiar with its application. When managing multiple casualties, apply the principles of triage in classifying the priority of treatment and evacuation. Rehearse and employ all of the mechanics of CASEVAC from the point of injury to the handover at a MTF. This handbook provides a number of considerations when employing medical support to SOF in combat. The challenges are numerous, but the special operations medic must deliver medical care to save Soldiers’ lives. The collection of TTP in this handbook will enhance the medic’s ability to determine the optimum method to deliver casualty survival assistance.
The essential guide to the operations of the Green Berets, America's most versatile and fascinating soldiers.
The 2004 enlargement of NATO and the EU is widely considered to be the last stage in overcoming the division of Europe. Even if this is true, however, the euphoria that came with the end of the Cold War has now run its course. Both NATO and the EU are facing major challenges, and it is far from clear whether the enlarged organisations will be more capable of tackling crucial security issues that their smaller incarnations were unable to resolve. How can the newly enlarged organisations project global influence if the competing interests of their member states outweigh their willingness to compromise? Moreover, is there a danger of Europe splitting between an "in groupî and those who are left "outsideî? At stake are the credibility and reliability of NATO and the EU, which see themselves as the most important guarantors of European security and cooperation. The Security Handbook examines the national interests of various Eastern and Central European countries regarding enlargement. These interests are then compared with expectations formulated on the part of NATO, the EU, and Russia. Leading politicians und experts from 12 countries have contributed to the project.

Imagine working all day in 100-degree plus temperatures under constant life-threatening circumstances, sometimes relying only on the negligible amount of hydration from a cactus you’ve dug up. This is the life of a U.S. Army soldier in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, which is why the U.S. Army Desert Operations Handbook is a vital reference for survival in one of the harshest environments in the world. This official guide covers how to plan and conduct operations, how the environment affects personnel and equipment, and most importantly, how to survive and receive supplies in the desert. The obvious problems with extreme temperatures are water location and mobility. However, from handling and caring for firearms to operating and fueling a tank, the entire game changes in the dry, sandy desert conditions. The skills in this guide are taken from lessons learned in real combat situations. Success in desert operations requires the ability to adapt with constant terrain and temperature changes, which are often drastic within the same twenty-four–hour period. All the while, the soldier must be able to move within a unit without being visible to unfriendly groups. This combat-tested manual is sure to arm anyone with the skills necessary to survive in the desert.
